The recent mass shootings in our country impel us to once again beg all citizens and all elected leaders to end the rampant rage and division that have overpowered the nation and too often result in mass, indiscriminate violence. We are a nation that promises a life free from fear, and yet we seem unable to stop the epidemic of hate that has overwhelmed us. As we have been carrying in our own hearts the pain being endured by families who have lost loved ones and those wounded through gun violence, we bring in as well those impacted by these latest attacks.

2SISTERS OF CHARITY AND FRIENDS PARTICIPATE IN LIGHTS FOR LIBERTY

A contingent of 25 from Convent Station, Sisters of Charity, an IHM sister, and friends from RAMP (Refugee Assistance Morris Partners) joined five hundred others for Lights for Liberty on the evening of July 12 outside of the Essex County Detention Center in Newark. We protested the criminal immigration policies of the Trump administration by, as one of the organizers said, “praying with our chants and praying with our feet.” A moving moment was when Ivan, a detainee, was able to telephone to the crowd and give a first hand account of the brutal conditions inside. There were large demonstrations in cities and towns all across the country - inspiring and hopeful!

Through her ministry to the people of Haiti, Sister Dianne Moore has come to know and to cherish many Haitian proverbs.  One of these, “piti piti nou rive,” is translated as “little by little, we arrive.”  This proverb might be a fitting byline for Sister Dianne’s years of ministry as a Sister of Charity.  With humility and a deep desire to listen and learn, Sister Dianne walks in solidarity with people in great need as little by little, she brings light and hope.  READ MORE
